The Higonokami is a traditional Japanese folding knife celebrated for its simple design, practicality, and enduring craftsmanship. Characterized by its distinctive lever (or “chikiri”) and absence of a locking mechanism, the blade is held open by thumb pressure on the tang — a design both minimalistic and remarkably reliable.

Originating in the late 19th century, the Higonokami takes its name from Higonokuni (modern-day Kumamoto Prefecture), where it was first produced and traded. It quickly became an indispensable everyday tool across Japan, used for household chores, outdoor activities, and even by students for sharpening pencils before mechanical sharpeners became common.

Each knife is handcrafted in Japan by Nagao Seisakusho, founded in 1894 (Meiji 27) and the sole trademark holder of “Higonokami”. With over a century of history, Nagao Seisakusho continues to uphold the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, producing blades that embody both tradition and functional beauty.
